Which documents do you need to sell a car in Luxembourg?
The full list of paperwork to gather before a sale appointment, in Luxembourg and for cars registered in France or Belgium.
The essential documents
Three items determine whether a sale can be completed: the registration certificate in the seller’s name, valid photo identification and the most recent roadworthiness certificate. Without the first, no sale can be registered.
Beyond those sit items that do not block the sale but directly affect the price: the service book, invoices for major work, both keys and the original accessories.
French-registered vehicle
You need a Cerfa 15776 transfer certificate signed in duplicate, the registration certificate struck through, dated and signed, and a certificate of administrative status less than fifteen days old confirming there is no lien or objection.
The transfer declaration must be filed online on the ANTS portal within fifteen days of the sale. That declaration is what releases you from liability for the vehicle.
Belgian-registered vehicle
The number plate must be returned to the Vehicle Registration Service to end the registration and the insurance cover. Keep the proof of return: it evidences the end of your obligations.
Special cases
Financed vehicle: ask your finance company for a recent settlement figure. Estate vehicle: gather the certificate of inheritance and the written agreement of the heirs. Sale by a third party: written authority and a copy of the registered keeper’s ID are mandatory.
